![]() ![]() ![]() When Angelou was three and her brother four, their parents' "calamitous marriage" ended, and their father sent them to Stamps, Arkansas, alone by train, to live with their paternal grandmother, Annie Henderson. Angelou's older brother, Bailey Jr., nicknamed Marguerite "Maya", derived from "My" or "Mya Sister". Louis, Missouri, on April 4, 1928, the second child of Bailey Johnson, a doorman and navy dietitian, and Vivian (Baxter) Johnson, a nurse and card dealer. Her books center on themes including racism, identity, family and travel. She made a deliberate attempt to challenge the common structure of the autobiography by critiquing, changing and expanding the genre. Angelou's most celebrated works have been labeled as autobiographical fiction, but many critics consider them to be autobiographies. Her works are widely used in schools and universities worldwide, although attempts have been made to ban her books from some U.S. She was respected as a spokesperson for Black people and women, and her works have been considered a defense of Black culture. With the publication of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Angelou publicly discussed aspects of her personal life. In 1993, Angelou recited her poem " On the Pulse of Morning" (1993) at the first inauguration of Bill Clinton, making her the first poet to make an inaugural recitation since Robert Frost at the inauguration of John F. Beginning in the 1990s, she made approximately 80 appearances a year on the lecture circuit, something she continued into her eighties. Angelou was active in the Civil Rights Movement and worked with Martin Luther King Jr. In 1982, she was named the first Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Angelou was also an actress, writer, director, and producer of plays, movies, and public television programs. These included fry cook, sex worker, nightclub performer, Porgy and Bess cast member, Southern Christian Leadership Conference coordinator, and correspondent in Egypt and Ghana during the decolonization of Africa. She became a poet and writer after a string of odd jobs during her young adulthood. She was an amazing woman that accomplished amazing feats in her life. Rather than speaking quickly in wrath, I would sit back and think quietly and speak only when those thoughts came into line with my beliefs. I wish more than anything that I could follow her in that way. She wasn’t afraid to stand up and proclaim her strength and assurance but she spoke words full of wisdom and thought. Her words were slow and filled with encouragement. When you watched Maya Angelou whether it was an interview or a reading of a poem, those are the two traits that clung to her like glue. One of my favorite bible verses that I need to recite to myself daily, if not minute by minute, says that we should be slow to anger and slow to speak (James 1:19). But there’s one thing I agree with her on without a doubt – acknowledging that we are all created by God and should give others respect. There’s things that she fought for, such as feminism, that I don’t agree with (sorry – I’m a hard core conservative). There’s many points that I disagree with her on. They will always remember that you tried, that you reached out. You might not succeed to be the rainbow in their cloud but at least you tried. ![]() One of my favorite quotes by her is “Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud”.
